A Walk with We In Front - HCMF//23

Featured in Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (HCMF//), A Walk with We In Front is a 4-channel soundwork made in collaboration with artists Caitlin Bellas, Stephen Bradley, Carla Fernandes, Izzy McNally and the Huddersfield-based walking group We In Front. The piece follows the journey of a walk that We In Front invited us on that focusses on significant sites for the Caribbean community in Huddersfield:

Starting at Venn Street, where performers of ska, soca and dub reggae sound systems from around the country and internationally came to perform in a now-demolished nightclub, we wound our way past Mackinley’s Caribbean & African Foodstore, to Sparrow Park – the site of the town’s first Black music club – then through the original immigrant neighbourhood of Springwood and to Greenhead Park, to participate in the Carriacou Big Drum and Dance workshop. We heard lots of fascinating stories, enjoyed great music and dancing, and had wonderful conversations and many laughs. This soundwork aims to communicate this experience and share these important stories.

You can listen to a 10-minute excerpt of a programme by BBC Radio 3, featuring interviews with members of We In Front and parts of the soundwork on BBC Sounds (39:22), and the full 42-minute piece here.

In Other Waters Linear Sound Redesign

My take on some UI/menu sounds from a marine-biologist game In Other Waters!

Arcane Sound Redesign

I made a redesign of an epic scene from Arcane!

Astroneer Linear Sound Redesign

I did a short sound redesign of one of my favourite games, Astroneer!

Creating my Audio ID

I created an audio ID for BenRoffeyAudio, with core ideas of video game aesthetics, the letter ‘b’ (for Ben, and my small logo - the root note is B!), and percussion - summing me up basically!

Thanks to the folks on airwiggles.com who gave me great feedback on earlier versions :)

A short video of some of our performance in Northampton Square.

Arrival

I created the soundscape of a scene from Arrival (2016), recording and manipulating sounds, and using some sounds from the BBC Sound Effects library.

Sleep

I was challenged to compose a site-responsive piece. I was intrigued by ideas of sleep as a destination and wanted to explore sleep stages, EEG data and dreams, and how that might be translated into music.

Hanna

I recreated the soundscape and sound FX of a scene from the film ‘Hanna’ (2011), using only a collection of provided sounds.

1 Minute from 1 Second

I created a few 1 minute pieces from manipulating a single second of recorded audio.

No Country for Old Men

I tried to capture the raw feeling of desperation and situate the listener into the mind of the character.
